Washington, D.C. - June 14, 2024
Argentina overcame an early own goal to defeat Guatemala 4-1 in an international friendly at the Washington Commanders stadium on Tuesday. Lionel Messi and Lautaro Martinez each scored twice for the Albiceleste, who extended their unbeaten run to 10 matches.
Guatemala took a shock lead in the fourth minute when Oscar Santis inadvertently deflected Nicolas Gonzalez's cross into his own net. However, Argentina responded quickly, with Messi leveling the score from the penalty spot in the 15th minute after Facundo Torres was fouled in the box.
Martinez gave Argentina the lead in the 31st minute, heading home a cross from Nahuel Molina. Messi made it 3-1 just before halftime, curling a free kick into the top corner.
