Juries in the United States Court System
Understanding the Differences
Types of Juries
The federal trial courts utilize two distinct types of juries: grand juries and trial juries.
Grand Juries
Grand juries are private bodies composed of laypeople who review evidence presented by the prosecutor's office. Their purpose is to determine whether there is sufficient evidence to indict an individual for a criminal offense.
Trial Juries
Trial juries, also known as petit juries, are common in both criminal and civil cases. They are responsible for determining the guilt or innocence of a defendant based on the evidence presented during a public trial.
