Hrw Calls For Stronger Sudan Arms Embargo As Un Weighs Sanctions

HRW calls for stronger Sudan arms embargo as UN weighs sanctions

The group urges the UN Security Council to impose a comprehensive arms embargo on Sudan

Human Rights Watch (HRW) has called for a stronger arms embargo on Sudan as the United Nations (UN) weighs sanctions against the country. The group said that the current arms embargo is not effective in preventing the flow of weapons to Sudan, which is used by the government to commit human rights abuses.

The HRW report, "Sudan: Strengthen Arms Embargo to Halt Abuses," documents the use of weapons by Sudanese security forces against civilians in Darfur, South Kordofan, and Blue Nile states. The report says that the government has used airstrikes, artillery, and ground attacks to target civilians, resulting in the deaths of thousands of people and the displacement of millions more.

The report also documents the use of child soldiers by Sudanese government forces.

HRW said that the current arms embargo on Sudan is not effective in preventing the flow of weapons to the country. The group said that the embargo has been violated by a number of countries, including China, Russia, and Belarus.

HRW urges the UN Security Council to impose a comprehensive arms embargo on Sudan. The group said that the embargo should include a ban on the sale of all weapons to Sudan, as well as a ban on the provision of military training and assistance.

HRW also called on the UN Security Council to impose targeted sanctions on Sudanese government officials responsible for human rights abuses.

The UN Security Council is currently considering a resolution that would impose sanctions on Sudan.

The resolution would impose a travel ban and asset freeze on Sudanese government officials and would also ban the sale of weapons to Sudan.

The resolution is expected to be voted on in the coming weeks.

HRW's call for a stronger arms embargo on Sudan is supported by a number of other human rights groups.

Amnesty International and the International Federation for Human Rights have both called for the UN Security Council to impose a comprehensive arms embargo on Sudan.

The Sudanese government has denied the allegations of human rights abuses. The government has said that it is committed to protecting civilians and that it is not using weapons against its own people.

The UN Security Council is expected to vote on the resolution on sanctions against Sudan in the coming weeks.
